By decree of 22 August 2013 published in the French Official Journal of 24 August 2013, Fontevraud Abbey and its surrounding areas, in the municipality of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, has been listed as one of the sites in the Maine-et-Loire département. This inclusion is part of the protection programme undertaken by the French State in the context of the Loire Valley inscription as a UNESCO World Heritage.

Even though the architectural property at Fontevraud was listed as a historical monument back in 1840, the natural surrounding areas and breathtaking views of and from Fontevraud Abbey were not afforded any specific protection – save for a listed site in 1970.

The listing boundary contains the abbey – the heart of the property justifying its protection – its immediate surroundings and the great landscape in which it lies.

Beyond protecting the views, the delimitation includes a whole series of local heritage features dotted around the abbey, as well as two villages-streets that are an integral part of the Loire landscape, attesting to settlement harking back centuries.

Management of the denser urban fabric is entrusted to the AVAP, which was approved by deliberation of the Fontevraud-l’Abbaye municipality on 28 January 2013.
