On 7 July 2017, the Centre for National Monuments presented the results of a project for restoration of Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, which took over two years to complete. Visitors are promised a brand new visit experience.

Restoration of the historical 19th-century decoration

In the context of a one-of-a-kind partnership with the Mobilier National, the ground-floor’s interior decoration has been restored throughout, recreating the luxuriously comfortable atmosphere it enjoyed in the 19th century.

“The delights of Azay”

The Château’s first floor has been reimagined by two visual artists, providing visitors with a dreamlike experience partly inspired by the figures of the magician Armide and Psyche, both of whom are depicted in the Château’s tapestries.

The Wine Press

The wine press, which is located at the entrance to the Château, has been turned into a visit introduction and interpretation centre. With the help of a “water-mirror” multimedia table, monumental visuals, a materials library, digital animation and a wide range of documentary sources, visitors are immersed in the monument’s eventful history.

New visit itinerary

A new itinerary and new tools are on offer: cultural signage, audioguides and visit guides have all been entirely renewed.

A visit app, downloadable free of charge from App store and Google Play , also helps visitors get to know the grounds and gain a better understanding of the monument’s architectural principles.
