Natura 2000

Published on 27 September 2016 - Updated 04 January 2021

The Natura 2000 network is a group of European nature reserves – on land and at sea – identified for the rare or threatened wild fauna and flora species they harbour, and their habitats.

Natura 2000 combines nature conservation with socioeconomic concerns. In France, the Natura 2000 network encompassed over 1,700 sites in 2016. For each site there is an objectives document, drawn up in the context of a territorial consultation process, and defining the state of knowledge of habitats, species and socio-economic activities, as well as the conservation measures and objectives. The resources available include the Natura 2000 Agreements for the attention of owners and beneficiaries, the place-based agro-environmental measures for the attention of farmers or the Natura 2000 Charter. These contractual and voluntary tools, together with the objectives documents, can be leveraged to obtain State grants in particular.
