Educational focus of "La Remontée du sel"

Published on 21 December 2016 - Updated 29 March 2019

For the 2005 and 2007 editions of La Remontée du sel, a travelling event held at various stop-offs along the Loire, activities exploring the Loire cultural landscape and heritage were organised for the general public and schoolchildren alike.

Aim

By rallying various heritage advocacy and education structures located around the Loire to the cause, Mission Val de Loire and the CPIE (Standing Centre for Environmental Initiatives) Touraine Val de Loire wished to unveil the diversity of Loire heritage approaches to classes.

Delivery

An original methodology

Primarily designed for schoolchildren, the morning stop-offs were held during the week. They comprised two sessions so as to give both schoolchildren and members of the public the chance to learn more about Loire heritage.

The first part was open to everyone and included an exhibition, vessels, manoeuvres with commentary, unloading and the tales of Father Jacques.

The second part was then reserved for schoolchildren, who enjoyed a day's worth of teaching and awareness-raising on the Loire cultural landscape and its associated heritage, through a "mini-cycle" of themed workshops.

During the workshops, several other themes associated with the cultural landscape were delved into, in addition to those to do with salt and the goods transported by Loire vessels. These included: the built heritage, natural heritage, craft expertise and the landscape approach.

Each child went away with a "logbook" designed to encourage them to continue their discovery and exploration of heritage.
