On Friday 5 July, a symbolic ceremony inaugurated the laying of the foundation stone for the Museum of Modern Art at Fontevraud, which should eventually house nearly 900 works from the Cligman collection. It is scheduled to open in 2020.
In the presence of Christelle Morançais, President of the Pays-de-la-Loire Region, Claude d’Harcourt, Prefect of the Pays-de-la-Loire Region, Bruno Retailleau, President of the Cultural Centre of the West and Régine Catin, Mayor of Fontevraud, Martine and Léon Cligman unveiled a plaque bearing the words “Fontevraud Le musée d’art moderne – Collections nationales Martine et Léon Cligman” (“Fontvraud Museum of Modern Art — Martine and Léon Cligman National Collections”), which will be placed in the museum at its inauguration in May 2020.
As a reminder: this museum is to be housed within the La Fannerie building located to the left of the abbey entrance; it is currently being equipped to house and promote these works. 600 works from the Cligman collection have been donated to the State, which has allocated this donation to the Region, with a commitment from the Pays-de-la-Loire Region to create a museum. A new donation, to be made directly to the Pays-de-la-Loire Region, will be signed for on 17 July; this will complete the collection at the Museum of Modern Art at Fontevraud.
