France joins the World Heritage Committee

Made up of 21 members*, this Committee meets every year to examine the new site applications for the World Heritage List. It also examines the state of preservation of the sites already on the list.

 

Debates on the future of the Convention focus particularly on:

• the link between the Convention, preservation and sustainable development;
• the public image of the Convention;
• assistance given to States for developing the necessary competences for protecting their heritage;
• cooperation and synergy between the activities and programmes regarding the 1972 Convention and UNESCO's other standards and activities.

 

* The newly elected members are as follows: Cambodia, Estonia, Ethiopia, France, Iraq, Mali, Mexico, Russian Federation, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand and United Arab Emirates. They join Australia, Bahrain, Barbados, Brazil, China, Egypt, Jordan, Nigeria and Sweden.
