To celebrate the 500th anniversary of Chambord in 2019, the chateau wants to recreate the atmosphere which reigned at the time of Francis I. Calling on participatory funding, the project aims to offer a representation reminiscent of a stay at the end of his reign, around 1545. The chateau would like to offer its visitors a full-on journey through time and an entirely new experience.

With this project, visitors will be immersed in decor from Francis I’s court as soon as they arrive on the ground floor of the chateau. They will be transported through time thanks to magnificent decor made up of wall coverings, tapestries, furniture and decorative features. A tour right up to the royal apartments will plunge visitors into the atmosphere of the court at the time of the Renaissance.

Refurnishing Francis I’s apartment has been a long process, started in the 1960s. Bringing together a diverse collection of available furniture and artworks, the museography of the time involved invoking the memory of Francis I. Today, the display no longer bears relation to current knowledge of the period considered, nor to the public’s expectations. That is why the chateau wants to recreate the atmosphere which reigned there at the time of Francis I.

The work has been assigned to Jacques Garcia, an internationally renowned interior and set designer, recognised for the quality of his reproductions and the finesse of his representations of major historic decor. For many years he has been an advisor to the prominent national institutions.

The overall cost of the operation is €250,000: for €100,000, the chateau will be able to rent the furniture for 10 years. If the threshold of €250,000 is reached, the furniture will be purchased and kept indefinitely.

This is the second call for participatory funding carried out by Chambord, after the one in 2017 for its formal French gardens.
