The Maison de la Loire du Loir-et-Cher and Val des Châteaux Canoë Kayak have clubbed together to offer a waymarked canoeing trail covering 12 kilometres. 8 numbered, removable buoys have been placed along the trail and the public can stop to read nature-related and cultural information on a topographical guide they will have been given.
These two centres welcome some 12,500 people a year, including 5,000 kayakists. The public can ask to be accompanied by a nature guide if they would like detailed information about the cultural and natural heritage of the Loire. However, not all of the associations have enough staff to accompany all tourists who, in turn, may not all be able to afford a personal guide.
This tool raises tourists' awareness of the natural and cultural wealth of the river while immersing them in a leisure activity as a family. The activity is practised in a sustainable manner so as not to "damage" our heritage (protecting terns, plants, etc.) and will also tell participants about the different sites that can be visited nearby.
Canoe-kayaking is a green means of transport. The document thus aims to make the public aware of their responsibility in terms of protecting areas and species (particularly during the tern nesting season on the islands).
The numbered buoys mean participants can row all the way along the trail in either direction. The public can also pick up the trail at four different points if they wish to cover a shorter distance for a shorter period of time. A second "loop-type" trail will be offered to enable the general public (tourists and locals alike), as well as school groups and leisure centre groups to explore heritage through a sort of treasure hunt.
