The permanent collection at Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art is gaining a further 800 works from the Art & Language movement. To celebrate this event, the museum is holding a special exhibition from 5 April to 30 June: ART & LANGUAGE: REALITY (DARK) FRAGMENTS (LIGHT).
The whole collection owned by Philippe Méaille, a private collector and founder of the museum, is now in safekeeping at Montsoreau. All of the works have been repatriated to France, after being loaned to the MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (MACBA).
Recognised as having a pioneering influence on Conceptual Art, the Art & Language movement can be viewed in the collections of the world's foremost museums, including Centre Georges Pompidou, Tate Modern and MoMA. The exhibition goes back over 50 years of these critical, provocative, subversive, punk artists' endeavours.
Through the prism of the key questions shaping the Art & Language movement (conversation and its ability to create, description, the fluid boundaries between artistic practices, the crisis in the relationship between artists, museums and art galleries and its implications in the creation process itself), Château de Montsoreau-Museum of Contemporary Art challenges the sometimes simplistic interpretation that has been given to Conceptual Art. Far from dematerialising the art object, has Conceptual Art in fact given rise to contemporary art?
