For the 5th year in a row, the Institut de France, Mission Val de Loire and municipality of Gennes-Val-de-Loire (Maine-et-Loire) are partnering up to offer a creative residency on the theme of the Loire Valley cultural landscape and its portrayals. Over a six-week period this coming summer, it will culminate in the presentation of one or more showpieces during the European Heritage Days on 21 & 22 September 2019.

This call for applications is intended for students at the end of their studies, or recent graduates with five years of higher education, from art, landscape and architecture schools in the Loire Valley and beyond the national territory. All forms of expression or artistic disciplines are welcome.

The artist-in-residence programme will be held at "La Colombière", which was bequeathed to the Institut de France, its current owner. This house was where sculptor Gustave Pimienta lived and worked for some thirty years until 1982.

It is located on the banks of the Loire in the new municipality of Gennes-Val-de-Loire, within the perimeter of the Loire Valley World Heritage listed site. The idea is thus to reconcile the theme of the residency with the reason for the Loire Valley's inclusion on the World Heritage list, i.e. as a cultural landscape.

Timeline:

  • Closing date for entries: 29 March 2019.
  • The names of the selected artists will be communicated by 12 April 2019 at the latest.
  • Provisional dates for the artist-in-residence programme: 24 June to 3 August 2019 or 4 August to 17 September 2019.
