Béhuard, the picturesque appeal of an island

The last special edition of Revue 303 magazine is devoted to the theme "One island, several islands". The relationship between people and islands, artificial islands, desert islands, endangered islands, extinct islands, the islands of our dreams ... this subject is broached from a wide range of angles. Regarding islands that are still inhabited, one article explores the historical village of Béhuard, both an island and village, lying in the middle of the Loire 17 km south-west of Angers.
Today, Béhuard cuts quite the picturesque destination figure, whose appeal (150,000 visitors a year) can be put down to its geology, landscape and history. The village has gained "Petite Cité de Caractère" (Small City of Character) status, and is currently the subject of a Heritage Inventory led by the Département of Maine-et-Loire, in partnership with the Pays de la Loire Region.
