In order to raise citizens’ awareness of the economic and social significance of European cultural heritage, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union have proclaimed 2018 “European Year of Cultural Heritage”. This year will enable the promotion of heritage as a key part of cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, the showcasing of best practices to ensure conservation and safeguarding of heritage as well as the development of knowledge on the subject among a large audience, in particular children and young people, local communities and people who are rarely exposed to culture.

The European Commission is encouraging Member States to label a variety of projects and to rally all stakeholders together in order to ensure that this themed year is a success.

The European Years are not funding programmes but rather awareness-raising campaigns both at European and national level focused on a specific theme.

All types of heritage (architectural, archaeological, living, cinematic, natural, etc.) and all types of project, at all scales (local, regional, national, international), are concerned.

Thus, the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage label will enable the place of heritage in France and in Europe to be showcased and the link between the European Union and citizens to be strengthened, by recognising and highlighting their heritage activities.

The labelling period runs from 7 December 2017 to 31 December 2018. The label will be awarded throughout 2018. Projects kicking off in 2018 and continuing in 2019, or beyond, can be labelled.

The Regional Directorates of Cultural Affairs are in charge of labelling projects for this year.
