The University of Orléans is undertaking a promotional/research project on the Volubilis archaeological site in Morocco which is listed as a World Heritage site. This project is part of the cooperation between the Centre-Loire Valley and Mekhnès-Tafilalet regions, and is funded by the regional research assistance programme. Mission Val de Loire will be involved in the promotion/adoption aspects.

The project's objectives are to:

  • Develop a set of tools for protecting the ancient site of Volubilis, for it is currently vulnerable to damage and this is lessening its ability to stand the test of time:
    • historical, scientific and technical inventory
    • study of materials and their environment
  • Help to promote the site to increase visitor numbers

Mission Val de Loire will rely on Moroccan professionals and institutions for the cultural and tourist promotion aspects with a view to increasing the social and economic benefits:

  • making the research work available to professionals and the population
  • visitor guides and aids

Volubilis, a World Heritage

Volubilis which, at the start of the Common Era, was a major city at the frontiers of the Roman Empire, is one of Maghreb's leading archaeological sites harking back to Roman times. It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage since 1997. This symbolic heritage for Morocco and the wider world is vulnerable to damage that is lessening its ability to stand the test of time, and ultimately undermining its image.
