On the 220th anniversary of Balzac's birth (1799-1850) in Tours, the city has wanted to celebrate his legacy and the link that bound the writer to the city. 2019 will be the Year of Balzac in Tours!

The City of Tours is putting together a special cultural programme for this anniversary, involving the whole city and beyond. Around the themes of literature, film, music and good food, discovery trails, entertainment, conferences and exhibitions will be hosted across many of the city's landmark sites, not least the Museum of Natural History, Museum of Fine Arts, University of Tours, the Municipal Library and the Balzac Museum in Saché.

Some of the highlights of these Balzac festivities include: exhibitions and activities on the anniversary weekend of 18-20 May, and the installation of a contemporary showpiece dedicated to Balzac in the garden of the Prefecture. An illuminated trail will also light up the mythical places of his life.
