The decorated cave of Pont-d’Arc, better known as the “Grotte Chauvet-Pont d’Arc” (Ardèche), contains the oldest paintings yet discovered (Aurignacian period: between 30,000 and 32,000 BC). Over 1000 paintings with anthropomorphic and animal motifs have been inventoried on its walls. France’s 369th World Heritage site was added to the list during the 38th session of the World Heritage Committee, held from 15 to 25 June 2014 in Doha (Qatar).

In all, 26 new sites were inscribed on the List during the session, bringing the total number of World Heritage sites to 1007, located in 161 countries. The 26 new additions comprise 4 natural sites, 21 cultural sites and 1 mixed site. The Committee also added 3 sites to the List of World Heritage in Danger and removed one site from it, as well as approving 4 site extensions.

The decision on the Chaîne des Puys - Faille de Limagne was deferred with an invitation for France to enter into further dialogue with the IUCN, the consultative body that had rendered an unfavourable opinion. The application may therefore be re-examined in the coming years.
