The Regional Council adopted its Agenda 21 at its plenary session of 19 and 20 June 2008. The Agenda is a “21st century local action plan”, in the mould of the action plan adopted at international level at the Rio Earth Summit of 1992.

"The Centre Region's Agenda 21 is both a strategic framework which provides steering tools, and a reference document for regional action over the period 2007-2013 designed to bolster sustainable development", explains François Bonneau, President of the Regional Council. "It is a high quality document, drawn up jointly. It will be useful if it helps to instil in our partners and residents a set of approaches which pave the way for the future of our region, and if it enables us to improve our ways of doing things in order to bring about a more concerted, better informed democracy."

We must point out that Agenda 21 is a policy of the Regional Authority and not of any other local, municipal or departmental authority. Analysis therefore focuses on the Region's areas of responsibility, although more global themes are addressed, such as territorial attractiveness, which is a shared concern.

One of the four objectives takes particular account of the region's natural and cultural heritage:
A preserved environment, an attractive and balanced territory.
"The Loire and its tributaries, the forests and the natural spaces of the region make up an extraordinary and fragile setting, one which is home to a rich architectural and historic heritage. We must protect and enhance these assets in order to attract residents and give them an excellent quality of life and services."
