Since 24 February 2014, a website devoted to Balzac’s “Le Lys dans la Vallée” (The Lily of the Valley) has provided access to the author’s original proofs, which were acquired by the Indre et Loire General Council for the Balzac Museum in Saché. The website also includes documentary resources and tools facilitating understanding of this masterpiece of French literature by a range of readerships (researchers, teachers, book-lovers, tourists, etc.) and inviting internet users to follow in Balzac’s footsteps into the heart of the Indre Valley.

This digital edition of Honoré de Balzac’s famous work enables users to trace the novel’s progress from its beginnings by making it possible to consult the text in its various stages of completion, keeping track of the author’s additions and corrections, and the successive editions that were published during his lifetime.

The “ Le Lys dans la Vallée ” website also provides internauts with a wide range of resources regarding the novel

  • notes on the novel’s characters and settings,
  • articles analysing the work,
  • images (illustrations, prints, photographs, postcards, etc.),
  • videos (extracts from stage or film adaptations),
  • sound documents (readings from the novel and musical adaptations),
  • educational worksheets, etc.

“Balzac’s proofs are more instructive than any presentation.” André Malraux, L’Homme Précaire et la Littérature, 1977.
