The municipality of Saint-Florent-Le-Vieil accepted the legacy of the writer Julien Gracq’s house in March 2009, and decided to follow the author’s wishes by turning it into a house for writers.

The house and Saint-Florent-le-Vieil have both passed into literature, not only in Gracq’s works but also in France’s cultural landscape as a whole, thanks to visits made by writers, researchers and friends over the last few years. As for the region, with its towns and countryside; its river and tributaries, its geography and history – it has become a character in its own right in Gracq’s work.

This is why, in tribute to the work and to the man himself, the Pays de la Loire Region has committed itself, alongside the municipality of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, to promote the ambitious project of a “Maison Julien Gracq”, designed above all to offer a welcome to writers and artists in residence.
