The main bed of the Loire between Les Ponts-de-Cé and Nantes presents significant incising as a result of developments carried out in the 20th century and the extraction of materials from the riverbed. This contract marks the first stage in the application of a programme aimed at taking back control of the Loire bed over the period 2014-2027. It puts into practice the Loire IV plan in the Pays de la Loire Region bearing on the restoration of aquatic environments.
The general aim of the action plan is to re-balance the Loire bed, and this must result in greater shifting in the Loire channel bottom and better connectivity of the hydraulic and secondary branches depending on the Loire flows.
It provides for structural actions in the minor bed and, for the branches, restoration work followed by upkeep where necessary.
The total estimated cost of the contract over the 2015-2017 period is EUR 7.34 million – EUR 6.92 million of which has been earmarked for actions, with the Loire-Bretagne river basin agency funding 45% of this and the Pays de la Loire region 29%.
For the 2018-2020 period, the works are estimated to cost some EUR 18 million. A budget of almost EUR 62 million is being tabled for the next 15 years.
