For the sixth year in a row, the Institut de France, Mission Val de Loire and municipality of Gennes-Val-de-Loire (Maine-et-Loire) are teaming up to offer a research or design residency on the theme of the Loire Valley cultural landscape and its portrayals. Lasting six weeks over the summer of 2020, the output of this programme will be presented during the European Heritage Days on 19 & 20 September 2020.

The call for applicants for the design residency is intended for Master’s level students currently finishing their course or recent graduates as well as more experienced professionals from art, landscape and architecture schools in the Loire region, or further afield, within France. All forms of artistic discipline and expression may be considered.

For the research residency, applicants are expected to be doctoral or post-doctoral students on research contracts and working in the Loire Valley.

The programme will take place at "La Colombière", which was bequeathed to the Institut de France, its current owner. It used to be the house and studio of sculptor  Gustave Pimienta,  over a thirty-year period until 1982.

It is located on the Loire riverbanks in the new municipality of Gennes-Val-de-Loire, within the boundaries of the Loire Valley World Heritage inscribed site. The idea is thus to combine the residency’s theme with the reason for the Loire Valley’s inclusion on the World Heritage List, i.e. as a cultural landscape.

Timeline:

  • Deadline for receiving entries: 30 March 2020.
  • The winning applicants will be announced by 28 April 2020.
  • Provisional residency dates: 6 July to 16 August 2020 or 17 August to 21 September 2020.
