On 9 April 2015, a partnership agreement was signed at Chambord between the National Estate of Chambord and the City Palace of Udaipur, managed by the Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation. This is the first cooperation project between the Loire Valley and Rajasthan. Developing exchanges between the Loire Valley châteaux and Rajasthan’s palaces was a shared wish, jointly expressed by Laurent Fabius, France’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The aim is to develop Indian tourism to France, as well as preserve and promote Indian heritage. The Loire Valley and Rajasthan both boast an outstanding heritage tourism offer and are both relatively close to their countries’ capitals, making them top-ranking tourist destinations.

The agreement sets out four objectives

  1. Promotion of knowledge of the two sites and their regions among two countries’ populations,
  2. Pooling of knowledge in the field of conservation,
  3. Joint communication to promote tourism to both destinations,
  4. Organisation of common events.

Due to the emblematic character of the two sites in their respective regions, this initial partnership could well serve as an example and have a knock-on effect in developing tourism and cultural relations between India and France.
