Dozens of archaeological operations have been carried out over the last 25 years or so, dozens of sites excavated, studied and compared by Orleans’ Municipal Archaeological Department (SAMO) and the Association for National Archaeological Excavations (AFAN), now the National Institute of Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP). Exhibition, activities, tour and mobile phone app shed new light on certain aspects of urban history.
Given that 25 years had passed since the last exhibition of its kind, Orleans Town Hall, the Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs (DRAC) and INRAP decided it was high time to let the public in on the discoveries made during the archaeological digs carried out in Orléanais.
A series of activities designed by Orleans Town Hall’s “City of Art and History” Department accompanies and extends the exhibition, which is to be held at the Fine Arts Museum from 1 April to 6 July 2014.
Orleans’ “City of Art and History” Department has created this new heritage tour in collaboration with the city’s Municipal Archaeological Department (SAMO);the tour focuses on Orleans’ city walls.
As part of its mission to promote archaeology, the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (INRAP) has produced a serious “virtual dig” game intended to raise young people’s awareness of the issues and methods of archaeology.
The web application is designed for smart phones and digital tablets.
In its in situ version, the mobile app enables location of places in the city of Orleans where archaeological remains have been unearthed during preventive excavations.
