The International Rivers and Heritage Institute and the University of Orléans are organising the 7th International Symposium on the Conservation of Monuments in the Mediterranean Basin, which will take place in Orléans in June 2007.

This International Symposium will be an opportunity for scientists, technicians and experts in the field of monument conservation and restoration to present their work and share ideas and experiences.

The theme chosen for the 2007 session, “Water and Cultural Heritage”, is a reference to the classic problem of the interactions between water and building materials. There will also be discussions on the problems associated with monuments in permanent contact with water, such as fountains, thermal baths, hammams and pipes, as well as bridges, quays, mills and chateaux surrounded by moats.

The Symposium will bring together conservationists, architects and engineers specialising in the deterioration and restoration of monuments, as well as historians and specialists involved in the areas of physics, chemistry, mineralogy and biology. Manufacturers of treatments for buildings, and institutions in charge of managing heritage, will also be present.

Papers on the themes of "General and technical studies", "Case studies", "Heritage Management" and "Biological Aspects" will be presented alongside an exhibition of scientific posters. Papers will be presented in English and given by researchers, technicians and conservationists from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, Tunisia, France, Belgium and elsewhere.

The event will offer participants three days of contributions and discussions at the Museum of Orléans and the campus of the University of Orléans. The fourth day will be spent in the field and will offer participants the chance to extend their work by visiting some of the Loire chateaux built with their "feet in the water".
