Causses and Cévennes, living and developing examples of Mediterranean agropastoralist cultural landscapes, were added to the list of World Heritage sites in June 2011. To manage their new status, the four départements concerned (Aveyron, Gard, Hérault and Lozère) joined forces to create an “Association de Valorisation des Espaces des Causses et des Cévennes” (AVECC), chaired by Jean Puech. A delegation from the association came to meet with Mission Val de Loire on 16 November 2011, seeking to draw inspiration from the Loire Valley’s experience.

The delegation was made up of elected officials from the départements involved, along with Boris Bernabeu, Sub-Prefect of Florac, and Alain Cardron, official representative of the Chairman of the AVECC. They met with the Mission Val de Loire team directed by Isabelle Longuet, Yves Dauge, who was one of the instigators of the Loire Valley’s listing, Pascale Rössler, Vice-President of the Centre Region, and Jean-Pierre Tressard, Sub-Prefect of Chinon and responsible for coordination of State departments with regard to the Loire Valley World Heritage site.

Discussions centred on the Loire Valley’s management system, which was specially set up following the site’s listing, in view of the Causses and Cévennes plan to create their own management system in December 2012. Mobilisation of local actors, the drafting and implementation of the management plan, management of the label, and activities to raise awareness of the landscape and its heritage were also touched upon.
