In its “La Maison Préférée des Français” series, France 2 puts traditional houses from France’s 22 regions to the vote, each of them typical of a specific regional architectural heritage and know-how. Pays de la Loire are represented by a troglodytic dwelling.
The dwelling in question covers 250 m² – a rarity in itself! – and housed a community of monks in the 11th century. Facing the Loire, its terraces provide unique views over the river. It maintains all the authenticity of a richly-textured medieval life, with a bathroom laid out in the centre of a former grape-pressing room dating back to the Middle Ages.
The Centre Region is represented by a Touraine farmhouse.
