At the end of 2011, the Loire Anjou Touraine regional natural park began brainstorming for recognition of the Loire Valley natural heritage as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. To this end, it is an associate member of the recent association "Ramsar France" which works to spread the news on and promote the Ramsar label in France, improve the management of listed Ramsar sites and encourage the creation of new sites.
In 1997, the Park had already begun discussions along these lines, resulting in the Loire Valley's inclusion in the World Heritage List in 2000 as a cultural landscape.
