An inventory of European digital cultural heritage material available through the MICHAEL portal

Supported by the European Commission as part of the eTen programme, the project brings together public and private bodies from the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Thanks to the multilingual MICHAEL service, scheduled to go live on 31 May 2007, both individuals and professionals will have the chance to explore the digital collections of museums, archive departments, libraries and other cultural institutions in Italy, France and the United Kingdom, with other countries joining the scheme in due course.

In addition, the French Ministry of Culture has recently set up a new Collections section on its website, offering one-click access to several million items of cultural data, many of them illustrated, from 14 different documentary sources.
The new section covers a remarkably wide range of areas, including architecture, archaeology, furniture, painting, sculpture, engraving, drawing, illuminations, the dramatic arts, ethnology, plans, maps, archives, genealogy, photography, events and more.
