The Château and gardens of Villandry, Bateau St Martin and the Troglodytes des Goupillères are the very first sites in the Loire Valley to have been awarded this national accreditation.
An audit carried out by an independent firm has checked over a
hundred criteria proving the warm welcome and high-quality
facilities in these sites.
Villandry has committed to the excellence initiative under way
in the main heritage sites of the Loire Valley, part of which
focuses on "quality". 19 châteaux and main monuments in the
Loire Valley are involved.
Villandry is also finding innovative ways to tend its
gardens and shifting entirely to organic techniques
The nine gardeners at Villandry have abandoned synthetic
fertilisers and chemical pesticides in favour of organic prevention
- by using natural predators (ladybirds and mealy bugs) against the
insects which feed off plants.
What's more, thermal tools have
been replaced with quieter, more environmentally friendly
electrical machinery.
