On 8 May 2015, Fontevraud-l’Abbaye inaugurated its new-look Place des Plantagenêts, freshly renovated as part of a village-centre requalification programme designed to make the utmost of the surroundings of one of the UNESCO site’s most emblematic monuments, the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud.
This communal initiative is part of a heritage strategy designed to accompany the Abbey site’s classification under the provisions of the law of 1930. Although its main aim is to promote tourism, relying on the drawing power of its heritage assets to boost the village’s key activities (accommodation, catering and commerce), it has also helped improve its inhabitants’ living environment.
Work carried out was partly subsidised by a special Pays de la Loire Region allocation and a UNESCO subsidy awarded in the context of the New Regional Contracts, following a favourable opinion on the part of Mission Val de Loire.
Designed by the TALPA agency between 2012 and 2015, the renovations carried out restore their sites’ patrimonial image whilst adapting them to new tourism uses.
They concern the route through the village, from the future Beaulieu reception area (camper-van and light vehicle reception) to the Royal Abbey, prioritising travel on foot and by bicycle and embellishing access to the Abbey’s main entrance.
The Pays de la Loire region lends financial support to UNESCO-site municipalities as part of its contractual territorial solidarity policy: in 2012 and 2013, €1,083,685 were allocated to projects selected from among proposals put forward by local authorities following Mission Val de Loire’s favourable opinions on their compatibility with the site’s OUV and Management Plan.
Such projects concern development of public spaces (banks of the Loire and town-centres), landscaping operations(public parks and surroundings of cultural facilities) and restoration and adaptation of built, monumental and vernacular heritage.
