Lime working in Anjou – A forgotten industry

The landscape and economy of Maine-et-Loire has been significantly marked by the production of lime. These lime kilns, the pride and joy of Anjou 19th century industry, have now fallen into disuse and are under threat of disappearing altogether. This is why two heritage fanatics decided to carry out this work.

After having provided some of the background information needed in order to understand this particular industry, and after having related the history of the Anjou lime kilns, the authors will invite you to explore the various “chaufours” which have just about managed to escape total destruction.
