On 16 July 2016, the World Heritage Committee, meeting in Istanbul for its 40th session, took the decision to inscribe Le Corbusier’s architectural work on the World Heritage List as an outstanding contribution to the Modern Movement. The seventeen sites chosen from Le Corbusier’s work and comprising this transnational serial property are spread over seven countries (Germany, Argentina, Belgium, France, India, Japan and Switzerland) and are a testimonial to the invention of a new architectural language that made a break with the past. They were built over a period of a half-century, in the course of what Le Corbusier described as “patient research”.

In 2000, the Loire Valley was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which reflects the richness and diversity of the planet’s cultural and natural heritage. Mission Val de Loire extends you a monthly invitation to acquaint yourself with other World Heritage sites, which are also our heritage.

Chandigarh Capitol Complex (India), the National Museum of Western Art in Tokyo (Japan), Casa Curutchet in La Plata (Argentina) and the Unité d’Habitation in Marseille (France) reflect the solutions that the Modern Movement sought to bring to questions of renewal of architectural techniques over the course of the 20th century in order to meet society’s needs. These masterpieces of human ingenuity also bear witness to the internationalisation of the practice of architecture at global level

The five Libyan sites, a site in Uzbekistan and another in Mali were inscribed on the List of World Heritage in Danger. The Nan Madol site, Ceremonial Centre of Eastern Micronesia (Federated States of Micronesia), was inscribed simultaneously on the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger.
