This work is the product of a topographic inventory carried out by the Heritages service and the Inventory of Pays de la Loire on the municipalities of Fontevraud-L’Abbaye and Montsoreau (Maine-et-Loire). Based on a presentation of the major constructions that are the abbey and the castle, it puts these historical buildings into context and enables us to explore the host of other elements which contribute to the rich heritage that these lands have to offer.
The literary lens zooms out to give an idea of the relationships between public buildings and the layout, the cavedwellers’ residences and even the buildings and places associated with different activities, notably wine growing and tuffeau stone extraction.
In a wider sense, it also shows the impact that these historical buildings had on the organisation of the first buildings erected by villagers who were drawn to the Montsoreau castle and, conversely, kept a distance from the abbey at Fontevraud.
This book holds the key for understanding and analysing the heritage of the villages and countryside of a part of Saumurois, typified by Fontevraud-l’Abbaye and Montosoreau.
