Listed on the General Inventory since 1987, the 18 coloured and enamelled painted ceramic tile pictures, largely the original work of Eugène Martial Simas, show varying degrees of deterioration requiring cleaning and consolidation works in order to restore their radiance and to round off the huge enhancement project for the station. Aware of the specific nature of the preservation of artistic heritage in public space, the Patrimoine – Environnement association, in partnership with Gares & Connexions has launched a call for contributions for their restoration.

Over 120 years old, these pictures were originally - and still are - by means of their rare and exceptional artistic quality each an inviting depiction of a promising destination. Prestigious Touraine sites and châteaux of the Loire thus have the place of honour, with Amboise, Chinon, Langeais, the château of Azay le Rideau and the Loches keep and other pictures give panoramas of French regions further afield.

These pictures are alluded to in the application "le Val de Loire vu du train" where Bertrand Ahier, SNCF Gares & Connexions architect, presents the Gare de Tours, built from 1896 to 1898 by Touraine architect Victor Laloux

The participatory financing

The first phase of the call for contributions on the crowdfunding website ULULE. The aim is to initially restore the ceramic picture depicting a vue of Arcachon. The sum to be raised for the first restoration, a piece depicting a view of Arcachon, is €8000.

When this first "inaugural" stage has been carried out, other initiatives to find sponsors will be launched, notably with institutional stakeholders who could be involved in raising the required funds to finance all of the ceramic works in the Gare de Tours.
