In February 2014, the statue of Saint Martin had to be taken down in all haste as it threatened to topple from its perch at any moment, its base on the basilica’s dome showing serious signs of wear at the hands of time. A health report on the edifice stressed the need for major restoration work to be undertaken if the building was to be saved, at an estimated cost of 1.7 million euros. The City of Tours has joined forces with the Heritage Foundation to launch an international public subscription fund for collection of the sums required for the project.

Work will focus on restoration of the statue and dome, and treatment of structural cracks and damp in the crypt. The Basilica was designed by the Tours architect Victor Laloux, a winner of the Rome Prize who was also responsible for Tours railway station and Town Hall, as well as Gare d'Orsay in Paris. Construction of the edifice began in 1886.
