The VITOUR landscapes project follows a first project (July 2005 to December 2007) in which the Loire Valley was the leading figure: Mission Val de Loire, in partnership with Interloire, the Loire wines inter-professional body.

The first project, developed with European INTERREG IIIc funding, focused on enhancing winemaking landscapes by developing cultural wine tourism. It led to the signature of the International Declaration of World Heritage Vineyards which founded the international VITOUR network and committed the seven partner sites and their regions to bringing the network to life.

For the new project, the partnership has been extended to 11 partners with the addition of:
  • Le Syndic de Chexbres (Lavaux, Switzerland)
  • The Town of Montalcino (Italy)
  • The Azores Region (Pico Island - Portugal)
  • The Lower Austria Region (Wachau, Austria)

An international consultant, Stephan Moritz, has been appointed to produce the candidacy dossier in collaboration with Karine Kubler, an independent landscape architect, responsible for development issues at the Upper Middle Rhine Valley (Rhine Gorge) site, Claudia Schwarz, Director of the site's UNESCO House and Thomas Jhost, Regional Director of Tourism.

The project comes under priority 2 for INTERREG IVc funding: "the environment and risk prevention".

The expected results:
  • Area 1: collecting, analysing and preparing to transfer best practices to other partner sites in the areas of effective protection and the innovative improvement of cultural winegrowing landscapes.
  • Area 2: Communicating best practices to local and regional actors and to residents, visitors and companies.

Project components:
  • Component 1: project management;
  • Component 2: publication of results;
  • Component 3: sharing experiences;
  • Component 4: pilot initiatives.
