On 25 September 2014, Ségolène Royal, Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, announced the “Action plan for reconquest of landscapes and the place of nature in cities”. 10 levers have been activated with a view to promoting, disseminating and increasing numbers of creative and effective initiatives.

Levers include:

“Printemps des Paysages et des Jardins” (Landscape and Garden Springtime)

The first edition of this event, which is aimed at the public at large, will take place in May 2015, in partnership with territorial authorities. It aims to bring together companies, local authorities, associations and schools to help raise French citizens’ awareness of the value of their landscapes as essential components of their living environment.

The event will be based on creation of a list of “1000 award-winning landscape projects” in five priority fields.

Landscape Plans

A new call for Landscape Plan projects is to be launched before the end of 2014 to encourage local authorities to draft territorial projects based on a landscape approach and share them with all local actors and inhabitants.

The Ministry of Ecology will be lending financial support to volunteer local authorities to help them get started on drafting landscape plans, and also hopes to learn some valuable methodological lessons in the process that may prove useful in drawing up all future territorial projects (Schémas de Cohérence Territoriale [SCOTs – Territorial Coherence Plans], planning documents, etc.).

European Heritage Days

In 2014, for the first time, European Heritage Days associated natural with cultural heritage. Future editions will continue to focus on this dual theme.

The landscape architect’s profession

With a view to reinforcing territorial and State services’ landscaping skills, the Ministry of Ecology is supporting creation of a new State diploma enabling full recognition of the landscape architect’s profession and promotion of the skills involved.

In addition, a national plan for training State employees was implemented in 2014, in partnership with higher schools of landscaping.
