The Loire Fleet during the 18th century

Published on 17 October 2016 - Updated 29 March 2019

The Loire Valley has been shaped by its river. The international reputation and image of this region today may have been built largely on its castles, but did you know that the Loire Valley also owes much to its rich boating history?

Before roads and the arrival of the railway, this phenomenon was sailing full steam ahead by the 18th century! Many quays, sloping ramps and cross-dykes, as well as some vessels, still attest to this time when the Loire and its tributaries were the most effective transport routes.

The fruit of research and insight gained from public and private collections in the Loire Valley, iconography features prominently. The book is organised around four main focus points which provide an overview of the subject: the stakeholders; trade; new needs, new horizons; the people and how they lived.
