Tourism is one of the mainstays of our local economy – a key source of employment and of major importance to our national and international reputation. The aim is to reap our fair share of the rewards in the offing due to the growing numbers of tourists worldwide (overall figures are forecast to double by 2030) by implementing a concerted strategy. This is why the Indre-et-Loire General Council entrusted Touraine’s Départemental Tourism Agency with the task of drafting a competitiveness plan for the Touraine-Loire Valley destination, which was voted on by the Départemental Assembly on 13 February 2015.
In February 2014, the statue of Saint Martin had to be taken down in all haste as it threatened to topple from its perch at any moment, its base on the basilica’s dome showing serious signs of wear at the hands of time. A health report on the edifice stressed the need for major restoration work to be undertaken if the building was to be saved, at an estimated cost of 1.7 million euros. The City of Tours has joined forces with the Heritage Foundation to launch an international public subscription fund for collection of the sums required for the project.
Two videos have recently been uploaded about post-war reconstruction as part of the cultural and professional events organised in 2014-2015 on this theme: a conference on regionalism and a documentary on Sully.
The PETRi group of associations is launching a participatory funding project on the Kisskissbankbank platform for publishing the book "Tourangelles et Tourangeaux. À vos recettes !". This book will bring together some forty easy recipes made with local produce from the Tours region, based on sharing and passing on an intangible heritage that reflects the local way of life.
