Heritage properties and flood risk

The Loire Public Establishment (EPL) has obtained a Jury Special Prize for its action to reduce cultural heritage’s vulnerability to floods. This prize was awarded by the Association Française des Etablissements Publics Territoriaux de Bassin (AFETAB – French Association of Public River-Basin Organisations) and the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs at the closure of the 2016 PREVIRISQ INONDATIONS workshops held in Lyon on the 17 October.

In 2015, reduction of the Loire and its tributaries basin’s cultural heritage properties’ vulnerability was achieved by:

  • introduction of a method of inventorying heritage exposed to flood risk
  • making a vulnerability self-diagnosis tool available to managers

◦   the tool was tested out on a number of heritage sites in Angers (49), La Riche (37) and Saint-Pryvé-Saint-Mesmin (45).

Since the beginning of 2016, listing of heritage properties has covered all 6 territoires à risque important d’inondation (TRIs – major flood risk areas) in the Loire and its tributaries basin.

The final aim is to supply managers of heritage sites and properties with a reliable operational method for assessing their vulnerability to flood risk, and provide indications and advice, often as regards organisation, with a view to reducing it. The results of such work should also be incorporated into stratégies locales de gestion du risque inondation (SLGRIs – local flood risk management strategies).
