As part of the activities of the UNESCO Chair "Rivers and Heritage: natural and cultural diversity of river landscapes", this workshop is being organised at Angers University on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 July 2015 to take stock of current research on the chair's theme and provide an initial discussion forum for researchers from the partner universities. The workshop is intended for academics, young researchers, professors, lecturers and students as well as the many professionals involved in water and environment management and development (local authorities, water management and development plans [SAGE], nature parks, federations and international organisations).

The aim will be to present an overview of the most recent works carried out on the natural and anthropic dynamics in river valleys, particularly in connection with farming practices, by focusing on their impacts on environmental integrity – including surface water quality.

The workshop will also seek to facilitate comparative approaches, either between disciplines by comparing ecological and social sciences, between fundamental research and technological and development aspects, or between countries in the North and South.

In accordance with the UNESCO Chair programme, the workshop will pay special attention to the management of river sites listed as a World Heritage, including the Loire Valley

The workshop will be held over two separate days:

  • the first day will be given over to round table discussions involving speeches and posters, as well as presentations in the field,
  • the second day to workshops in small groups. The purpose of these workshops is to draw up a common text which ranks the challenges in order of priority and sets them alongside recommendations. This text will form the basis for developing comparative analytical methods between sites and for ultimately producing a "good practice guide" in response to the Chair's spécifications.
